John Marks is still the mayor of Tallahassee, but a group of high school students gave him a run for his money Tuesday morning.

11th graders from public and private schools in Tallahassee gained first-hand insight into government by having a mock session of the Leon County School Board.

Also, Mayor John Marks assisted the students in holding a mayoral election, where four students wrote and delivered their own “candidate” speeches.

Chiles High School Student Ernest Calderon was elected “mayor.”

He says, “We get to see all these cool things around the city that we had never seen before if we weren’t in the program. So, it’s just a great opportunity.”

Rickards High School Student Saintclaire Mottley says, “The program has been so, so, so informative. It’s something new, the first time I’ve done a program like this. it was up close and personal. Overall, it’s just really enriching.”

Other city and county leaders came to speak to the students.

The program is a part of the Chamber of Commerce’s “Youth Leadership Tallahassee.”
