Building Better Boards

Building Better Boards is a training program designed by Leadership Tallahassee for novice and veteran board members, as well as agency staff/professionals. Sessions are informative and include time for discussion and interaction. A light dinner is included. Building Better Boards is the best opportunity for you and your board members or volunteers to receive valuable training and resource materials.
The Topics for this Year’s Sessions of Building Better Boards are based on the 10 Basic Responsibilities of a Board of Directors. Attendees are guaranteed to come away with useful ideas and tools to enhance board governance and operations. Boards wanting to cover all BBB workshop topics should register 5 participants. Participants will be able to choose two of the following workshops:

- Determine the Organization’s Mission & Purpose: Pointing the Way – Panel Discussion with Board Chairs and Executive Directors. Moderator: Darryl Jones, Bethel CDC
- Ensure Effective Organizational Planning – Rosalind Tompkins-Whiteside, Mothers in Crisis
- Ensure Adequate Resources: The Elements of a Development Strategy – Alyce Lee Stansbury, Stansbury Consulting
- Ensure Effective Financial Management: Reading a Balance Sheet and a Profit and Loss Statement – Mark Payne, James Moore & Co.
- Enhance the Organization’s Public Image: It’s More Than a Communications Strategy – Scott Van Damen, Volunteer Florida
- Govern the Organization by Broad Policies & Objectives: Using and Developing a Road Map – Carol Gordon, The PG Group
- Ensure Continuity & Representation on the Board through its Members: Board Member Recruitment – Ken Armstrong, United Way of the Big Bend
- Manage the Governance of the Board: How to Involve Youth On Your Board – Debbie Bergstrom Breeze, Communities in Schools and Julie Lovelace, Leadership Tallahassee
- Assess the Board’s Own Performance: Board Satisfaction – Dan Clark, Dan Clark Associates
- Select/Evaluate/Support the Executive Director – Kelly Otte, UPHS

$30/person before April 25 Every registration received after April 25 must include an additional $25/person.
Leadership Tallahassee has partnered with United Partners for Human Services (UPHS) to offer Building Better Boards in conjunction with the UPHS Conference for Excellence in Non-Profit Leadership.
